Naviera Armas - Ferry Lines

Naviera Armas was a major Spanish ferry operator serving the Canary Islands and routes between mainland Spain and North Africa. During 2026, the principal Armas Trasmediterránea ferry operations were acquired by Baleària, meaning Naviera Armas should no longer be treated as a separate current ferry network in the same way as before.

Current status: Former Armas Trasmediterránea services in the Canary Islands, Alborán Sea and parts of the Strait of Gibraltar have been incorporated into Baleària. In the Canary Islands, the acquired operation is now presented as Baleària Canarias.

Current status of Naviera Armas

Naviera Armas was historically one of the principal ferry operators in the Canary Islands and later formed part of the wider Armas Trasmediterránea operation.

Its position changed substantially in 2025 and 2026 when Baleària agreed to acquire major parts of the Armas Trasmediterránea business. Spanish competition authority CNMC approved the acquisition of the Canary Islands assets and the relevant Strait of Gibraltar assets in March 2026.

Baleària took effective control of the Canary Islands operation on 18 May 2026. The acquired inter-island services and connections between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain are now being operated within the Baleària group under the Baleària Canarias identity.

On 1 July 2026, Baleària also announced completion of its acquisition process for Armas Trasmediterránea assets in the Strait and Alborán areas.

For this reason, historic references to a Naviera Armas route do not necessarily indicate that Naviera Armas remains the current operator of that service.

The Naviera Armas ferry network

Before the 2026 integration, the Armas network was centred on three main geographical areas:

inter-island ferry services within the Canary Islands
connections between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain
routes between southern mainland Spain and North Africa

The Canary Islands were the historic core of the business. Naviera Armas connected major islands including Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro through a combination of conventional ferries and fast ferries.

These routes formed an important part of the wider Canary Islands ferry network.

Canary Islands services

Naviera Armas developed an extensive network between the main Canary Islands, carrying foot passengers, cars and commercial freight on many of its services.

Mainland Spain and the Canary Islands

Armas Trasmediterránea also operated longer-distance services linking mainland Spain with the Canary Islands. These routes supplemented the inter-island network and provided passenger, vehicle and freight connections between the archipelago and the Iberian Peninsula.

These services formed part of the assets transferred to Baleària in 2026. Current mainland-Canary Islands sailings should therefore be checked under the present Baleària network rather than assumed to operate under the Naviera Armas brand.

Alborán Sea and Strait of Gibraltar

Armas Trasmediterránea also operated passenger and freight services between southern Spain and North Africa, including operations in the Alborán Sea and Strait of Gibraltar markets.

Baleària agreed to acquire significant Armas assets in these areas as part of the wider transaction announced in 2025. The CNMC approved the relevant acquisitions in March 2026, and Baleària announced completion of the Strait and Alborán integration on 1 July 2026.

These services should now be treated as part of the current operator networks that succeeded Armas rather than as an active standalone Naviera Armas network.

Fleet and vessels

Naviera Armas and Armas Trasmediterránea operated a mixture of conventional ro-pax ferries and high-speed vessels. Many ships carried the Volcán naming tradition associated with the Armas fleet.

The 2025 agreement between Baleària and the owners of Armas Trasmediterránea covered the management or acquisition of a substantial group of vessels alongside routes, employees and other operating assets.

Following the integration, ships formerly associated with Armas may continue operating within the successor network, may be renamed, or may be redeployed. FerryLines therefore treats fleet information as time-sensitive rather than maintaining a historic Armas vessel list as if it represented the current fleet.

From Naviera Armas to Baleària Canarias

The most important recent change is the transfer of the Canary Islands operation to Baleària.

Following regulatory approval, Baleària took effective control of the Armas Trasmediterránea Canary Islands assets in May 2026. The operation includes both inter-island services and connections between mainland Spain and the archipelago.

The current Canary Islands operation is being developed under the Baleària Canarias identity. Baleària has also begun introducing its own vessels and investment programme into the network.

This means FerryLines should distinguish between:

Naviera Armas – the historic operator and brand covered on this page
Armas Trasmediterránea – the wider business from which the acquired assets originated
Baleària Canarias – the current Baleària operation succeeding the acquired Canary Islands network

Passenger, vehicle and freight services

Naviera Armas was primarily known for ro-pax ferry services carrying passengers, private vehicles and commercial freight. High-speed vessels were also used on shorter inter-island connections.

Passenger and vehicle access varied by route and vessel. Historic Armas service information should not be used to determine current availability, as operators, vessels and timetables have changed following the 2026 integration.

The current status of Naviera Armas and Armas Trasmediterránea was checked against announcements from Baleària and decisions published by Spain’s Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC).

The CNMC authorised Baleària’s acquisition of the relevant Armas assets in the Canary Islands and Strait of Gibraltar in March 2026. Baleària announced that it took effective control of the Canary Islands assets on 18 May 2026 and completed the integration of the relevant Strait and Alborán assets on 1 July 2026.
