What is included on a ferry operator page?

FerryLines operator profiles are permanent guides to the ferry networks operated by individual companies. They are not news archives or official customer service pages.

Where relevant and verifiable, an operator profile covers:

the company’s current operating status
the regions and countries it serves
active passenger and vehicle ferry routes
main ports used by the operator
relevant fleet information
seasonal services and important timetable patterns
new, suspended or discontinued routes where relevant
recent changes affecting the operator’s ferry network

Operators, routes and ports

Ferry operators are one part of a wider network. A company may operate several routes between different ports, and some routes are served by more than one operator.

For example, the Helsinki-Tallinn route is currently served by Tallink Silja Line, Eckerö Line and Viking Line. The Hirtshals-Kristiansand route is served by Color Line and Fjord Line.

Passenger, vehicle and freight operators

Ferry companies can operate very different types of services. Some concentrate on passenger and vehicle ferries, others combine passenger traffic with substantial commercial freight operations, and some operators run freight-only shipping services.

FerryLines distinguishes between these service types. The fact that an operator runs a ferry or ro-ro service does not automatically mean that ordinary passengers, foot passengers or private vehicles can use it.

Individual operator and route profiles therefore state passenger, vehicle and freight access separately where this is relevant.

Operator groups and ferry brands

Ferry company structures can be complex. A ferry brand may be owned by a larger transport group while continuing to operate under its established name, and ownership can change without the route network or customer-facing brand changing immediately.

FerryLines treats the operator or brand that actually provides and markets the ferry service separately from its wider corporate ownership where this distinction helps explain the network.

This is particularly important when several brands share a booking platform or when an established ferry company has been acquired but its former name remains widely used in historic route information.

Active and historic ferry operators

The ferry industry changes through mergers, acquisitions, rebranding, contract changes and company closures. An operator found in an older ferry directory may therefore no longer exist as a standalone current operator.

The main FerryLines operator directory focuses on useful permanent profiles. Historic brands can remain in the directory where they are important for understanding existing routes, companies, vessels or legacy references, but their status is stated clearly.

Naviera Armas, for example, remains an important operator entity because of its historic role in the Canary Islands even though its principal operations were incorporated into Baleària during 2026.

Sources and verification

FerryLines operator profiles are checked against current information from ferry companies, port authorities and other primary sources where available. Routes, ownership, fleet deployment and operating arrangements can change over time and are reviewed independently for each operator.

FerryLines distinguishes current operators and services from historic brands, freight-only operations, proposed services and discontinued routes. Each route-sensitive operator profile includes its own visible last-checked date.
