Hirtshals is one of Denmark’s principal international ferry ports and the country’s main passenger gateway to Norway. Color Line and Fjord Line operate routes to Kristiansand, Larvik, Stavanger and Bergen, while Smyril Line connects Hirtshals with the Faroe Islands and Iceland.

Current ferry services from Hirtshals
Hirtshals has one of the broadest international ferry networks of any Danish port.
Color Line operates frequent passenger and vehicle ferries to Kristiansand and Larvik. Fjord Line connects Hirtshals with Kristiansand and operates a longer year-round route to Stavanger and Bergen.
Smyril Line adds a very different service, connecting Hirtshals with Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands and Seyðisfjörður in Iceland.

Hirtshals-Kristiansand ferries
Kristiansand is the busiest and shortest major international ferry destination from Hirtshals.
Both Color Line and Fjord Line operate passenger and vehicle services on the route.
Color Line currently operates the crossing with SuperSpeed 1, with a journey time of around three hours and fifteen minutes.
Fjord Line offers two types of service. Fjord FSTR operates seasonally and completes the crossing in around two hours and twenty-five minutes, while Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord provide conventional year-round crossings of around three hours and fifty-five minutes.
The combination of operators and vessel types makes Hirtshals-Kristiansand one of the strongest Denmark-Norway passenger ferry corridors.
Hirtshals-Larvik ferry
Color Line connects Hirtshals with Larvik in south-eastern Norway.
The route is currently operated by SuperSpeed 2 and takes around three hours and forty-five minutes under the standard operating pattern.
Larvik provides convenient road access towards Oslo and south-eastern Norway and offers an alternative to travelling through Kristiansand.
Hirtshals-Stavanger-Bergen ferry
Fjord Line operates a year-round overnight route from Hirtshals to Stavanger and Bergen.
The service is operated by Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord.
The current journey from Hirtshals to Stavanger takes around eleven hours, while the full voyage to Bergen takes approximately seventeen and a half hours.
The route carries passengers, cars, motorhomes, caravans and commercial traffic and provides direct access from Denmark to western Norway.
Faroe Islands and Iceland
Smyril Line operates Norröna from Hirtshals towards Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands and Seyðisfjörður in eastern Iceland.
This service gives Hirtshals a network role extending beyond Scandinavia into the North Atlantic.
The operating pattern changes during the year. In summer, Norröna normally links Hirtshals, Tórshavn and Seyðisfjörður on a regular seasonal rotation, while the spring and autumn timetable follows a different pattern.
The service accepts passengers and vehicles and is the principal scheduled passenger ferry connection between continental Europe, the Faroe Islands and Iceland.

Color Line terminal
Color Line’s Hirtshals services depart from the ferry terminal area at the Port of Hirtshals.
Departure point: Færgeterminalen, 9850 Hirtshals.
Color Line operates separate vehicle check-in arrangements for its Kristiansand and Larvik services. Passengers should follow the operator’s signs and arrive according to the check-in time stated with their booking.
Fjord Line terminal
Fjord Line operates its Hirtshals passenger services from the terminal at Containerkajen.
The terminal handles both the high-speed Kristiansand service and the conventional cruise ferries towards Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen.
Foot passengers check in at the terminal before proceeding to the waiting area and boarding arrangements.
Smyril Line terminal
Smyril Line uses the Fjord Line terminal for its Hirtshals departures.
Terminal address: Containerkajen 4, 9850 Hirtshals.
Smyril Line states that the terminal is approximately 30 to 35 minutes on foot from Hirtshals town centre.
Passengers travelling on Norröna should check in no later than one hour before departure under the current operating instructions.
Passenger and vehicle access
Hirtshals is particularly important for passengers travelling with vehicles.
The principal Color Line and Fjord Line Norway ferries accept cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans, subject to the operator’s booking conditions.
Foot passengers can also use the main Norway services.
Smyril Line’s Norröna carries both passengers and vehicles on the North Atlantic route.
Commercial freight forms another major part of the port’s ferry activity.
Getting to Hirtshals ferry port
Hirtshals is in northern Jutland and is directly connected with Denmark’s road network.
The E39 motorway runs to Hirtshals, making the ferry port straightforward to reach by car from Aalborg and the wider Danish and European motorway system.
The individual ferry terminals are located around the harbour rather than at one single passenger building, so drivers should follow signs for their operator.
Foot passengers should check the location of the correct terminal before arrival, particularly when travelling with Smyril Line or Fjord Line.
Hirtshals as a Norway gateway
Hirtshals provides direct ferry access to three important Norwegian regions.
Kristiansand is the closest major Norwegian gateway and provides access to southern Norway. Larvik is useful for south-eastern Norway and the Oslo region, while Stavanger and Bergen provide direct access to the west coast and fjord regions.

Seasonality
Most of Hirtshals’ core Norway ferry network operates throughout the year.
Color Line operates its Kristiansand and Larvik services year-round, while Fjord Line’s conventional ferries to Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen also have a year-round operating pattern.
Fjord FSTR is seasonal and currently operates mainly between March and September.
Smyril Line’s North Atlantic service has a strongly seasonal timetable, with different sailing patterns during spring, summer and autumn.
How Hirtshals fits into the ferry network
Hirtshals is one of the main maritime gateways between continental Europe and Norway.
Road traffic from Denmark and countries farther south can reach Hirtshals via the motorway network and continue by ferry to Kristiansand, Larvik, Stavanger or Bergen.
