Hirtshals-Kristiansand is the shortest major ferry corridor between Denmark and southern Norway and is served by two competing operators.
Color Line operates the route with SuperSpeed 1, while Fjord Line provides both high-speed and conventional ferry services.

Color Line
Color Line operates Hirtshals-Kristiansand with SuperSpeed 1.
The standard crossing takes around three hours and fifteen minutes. SuperSpeed 1 is designed for high-capacity passenger, vehicle and freight traffic and can carry more than 2,000 passengers and around 750 cars.
The service operates throughout the year and forms one of Color Line’s two principal Denmark-Norway routes from Hirtshals.
Fjord Line
Fjord Line offers two different types of service between Hirtshals and Kristiansand.
Fjord FSTR is the fastest option, with a crossing time of approximately two hours and twenty-five minutes. It operates mainly between March and September.
The conventional ferries Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord also serve Kristiansand as part of Fjord Line’s wider Denmark-Norway network.
These larger ferries operate throughout the year and take approximately three hours and fifty-five minutes on the direct Hirtshals-Kristiansand sector.
Hirtshals ferry terminal
Hirtshals is one of Denmark’s main international passenger ferry ports.
Color Line and Fjord Line use separate check-in arrangements within the harbour area, so passengers should follow signs for their operator.

Kristiansand ferry terminal
The ferry terminal in Kristiansand is centrally located close to the city centre, railway station, bus station and the E39 road network.
Color Line and Fjord Line both use the Kristiansand ferry harbour for services to Hirtshals.

Passengers and vehicles
Both Color Line and Fjord Line accept foot passengers and private vehicles on the Hirtshals-Kristiansand route.
Cars, motorcycles, motorhomes and caravans can be carried subject to the operator’s booking conditions. Commercial freight is also an important part of the corridor.

Fast ferry or conventional ferry?
The route offers a choice between different types of ferry.
Fjord FSTR provides the fastest crossing during its operating season. Color Line’s SuperSpeed 1 is slightly slower but operates throughout the year.
